Johanna Lawrenson was born in New York City, and later lived in France and Mexico. She was a high-fashion photography model in her 20's and later a photographer.
She also worked with her partner, Abbie Hoffman, in an environmental movement to save the St. Lawrence River, home of her mother’s family. She was an organizer of tours to Nicaragua and Central America during the 1980's and continues work with Save The River! and the “Abbie Hoffman Activist Foundation”.
