The Chambers family later moved to Kanawha City, West Virginia. At the age of nine, John was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disorder that affects reading, writing, and verbal communication. However, with the help of specialized therapy, John was able to overcome his condition and live a fulfilling life.
He graduated from West Virginia University in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in humanities and natural sciences.
In 1974, Chambers obtained a Juris Doctor degree. He continued his education and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Indiana University in 1975.
From 1976 to 1982, John Chambers worked at IBM, and from 1982 until 1990, he was employed at Wang Laboratories.
