  • Iraqi government loses significant territories in northern Iraq to the Islamic State, including the region from Mosul to Tikrit and Tal Afar along with parts of Kirkuk and Diyala Governorates.[20]
  • Islamic State comes within 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the centre of the capital city Baghdad.[21]
  • A government counter-offensive leads to the recapture of territory north and west of Baghdad.[22][23]
  • Kurdish forces take control of Kirkuk, parts of northern Nineveh and north-eastern Diyala.[24
